In Singapore, HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is available at most hospitals, sexual health clinics, and GP clinics that offer HIV/STI services. PEP is a preventive treatment taken after potential exposure to HIV, such as unprotected sex, condom breakage, or occupational exposure (e.g., needlestick injury).
PEP works by preventing the virus from establishing itself in the body. It is a 28-day course of antiretroviral medication and must be started within 72 hours of exposure for it to be effective — the earlier you start, the higher the protection rate.
During your visit, the doctor will assess your risk level, explain how to take the medication, and may recommend HIV testing at follow-up intervals (usually at 1 month and 3 months). PEP is safe for most people, and side effects—if any—tend to be mild, such as tiredness or nausea.
