Core Web Vitals are a set of performance metrics created by Google to measure the speed, responsiveness, and visual stability of a website. They help evaluate the overall user experience, especially how quickly pages load and how smoothly users can interact with them.

For eCommerce websites, including stores migrated from Magento to Shopify, Core Web Vitals are important because they can impact user satisfaction, conversion rates, and search engine performance.

The Three Main Core Web Vitals Metrics

    1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

    • Measures how quickly the largest visible content element loads on a page.
    • Usually includes hero images, banners, or large product images.
    • A good LCP score is 2.5 seconds or faster.

    Example:
A product page where the main product image loads quickly provides a better shopping experience.

    2. Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

    • Measures how quickly a website responds when a user interacts with it.
    • Includes actions such as clicking buttons, opening menus, adding products to cart, or using filters.
    • A good INP score is 200 milliseconds or less.

    Example:
When a customer clicks “Add to Cart,” the action should happen immediately without delays.

    3. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

    • Measures how much the page layout unexpectedly moves while loading.
    • Prevents frustrating experiences where buttons or content shift suddenly.
    • A good CLS score is 0.1 or lower.

    Example:
A customer should not accidentally click the wrong button because images or banners moved while loading.

Why Core Web Vitals Matter for Shopify Stores

    • Improves customer experience.
    • Helps reduce bounce rates.
    • Can support better search engine rankings.
    • Improves mobile shopping performance.
    • Increases conversion rates.
    • Helps create a faster and more reliable store.

How to Improve Core Web Vitals

    • Optimize product images and compress large files.
    • Use lightweight Shopify themes.
    • Reduce unnecessary apps and scripts.
    • Improve JavaScript performance.
    • Use optimized fonts and media.
    • Implement lazy loading for images.
    • Monitor performance regularly using tools like Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights.

    Example

A Magento store migrating to Shopify has slow product pages because of heavy scripts and large images. After migration, the merchant optimizes images, removes unnecessary apps, and improves theme performance. As a result, pages load faster, customers browse more easily, and conversion rates improve.

    In Simple Words

Core Web Vitals measure how fast, responsive, and stable a website feels to users. For Shopify stores, maintaining strong Core Web Vitals helps deliver a better shopping experience, improve SEO performance, and increase the chances of converting visitors into customers.
