A good CTA (Call to Action) clearly tells users what to do next and gives them a compelling reason to take that action. In CRO, an effective CTA should be clear, noticeable, relevant, and easy to interact with.

Key characteristics of a good CTA:

    1. Clear and specific – Tell users exactly what will happen, such as “Add to Cart,” “Start Free Trial,” or “Get a Quote.”
    2. Action-oriented – Use direct action words such as Buy, Start, Get, Shop, Download, or Sign Up.
    3. Benefit-focused – When appropriate, communicate what the user gets, such as “Get 20% Off.”
    4. Visually prominent – Use sufficient contrast, whitespace, and appropriate sizing so the CTA is easy to notice.
    5. Strategically placed – Position it where users naturally make decisions, such as near the product information or form.
    6. Easy to use on mobile – Make buttons large enough and easy to tap without accidental clicks.
    7. Relevant to the page – The CTA should match the user’s intent and the page’s primary objective.
    8. Consistent – Similar actions should use consistent button styles and wording throughout the website.
    9. Focused – Avoid multiple competing primary CTAs that can distract users or create decision fatigue.
    10. Testable – A/B test CTA wording, placement, size, and design to determine what performs best.

    Example

    Instead of:

    “Submit”

    Use:

    “Get My Free Quote”

The second CTA makes both the action and benefit clearer.

In simple terms: A good CTA is clear, noticeable, action-oriented, relevant, and makes the next step obvious to the user.
