Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight) is a shipping calculation based on the space a package occupies, rather than only its actual weight.
Carriers typically calculate it using:
Volumetric weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM factor
If the volumetric weight is higher than the package’s actual weight, the carrier may charge shipping based on the volumetric weight.
For example, a large but lightweight box may cost more to ship because it takes up significant space in a delivery vehicle or aircraft.
