What is visual hierarchy?

Visual hierarchy is the arrangement and presentation of design elements to show users which information or actions are most important. It guides the user’s attention through a page in a logical order.

Designers create visual hierarchy using:

• Size: Larger headings or buttons usually attract more attention.
• Color and contrast: High-contrast elements can stand out from surrounding content.
• Spacing: White space can separate important elements and reduce clutter.
• Position: Elements placed prominently, such as near the top of a page, may receive more attention.
• Typography: Font size, weight, and style can distinguish headings from supporting text.
• Images: Prominent images can draw attention and communicate information quickly.
• Grouping: Related elements can be visually grouped to show their relationship.

For example, an eCommerce product page might visually prioritize the product name → price → key benefits → product options → Add to Cart button, while placing secondary information such as detailed specifications further down the page.

In CRO, effective visual hierarchy can help users understand a page quickly and locate important actions such as Buy Now, Add to Cart, or Request a Quote. It should make the intended information easier to find without misleading or distracting users.
