Multi-touch attribution is a marketing measurement method that distributes credit for a conversion across multiple interactions a customer has with a brand before completing a desired action. These interactions, known as touchpoints, may include paid advertisements, social media posts, email campaigns, organic search results, influencer promotions, and website visits.

Instead of giving all the credit to just one interaction, multi-touch attribution helps marketers understand how different channels contribute to the customer journey.

    How does multi-touch attribution work?

A customer may interact with a brand several times before making a purchase. Multi-touch attribution records these interactions and assigns credit according to a selected attribution model.

For example, a customer buying a diamond ring from a Shopify store might:

    1. Discover the brand through an Instagram advertisement.

    2. Visit the website through a Google search.

    3. Click an email campaign offering a product guide.

    4. Return through a retargeting advertisement.

    5. Purchase the ring.

A multi-touch attribution model may assign some conversion credit to each of these touchpoints.

    Common multi-touch attribution models

    Model

    How credit is assigned

    Linear attribution

Distributes credit equally across eligible touchpoints.

    Time-decay attribution

Gives more credit to interactions closer to the conversion.

    Position-based attribution

Gives more credit to selected touchpoints, often the first and last.

    Data-driven attribution

Uses available data to estimate each interaction’s contribution.

Attribution models and their availability vary by platform. Google Analytics 4 and Google Ads, for example, have their own supported reporting and attribution options.

    Why is multi-touch attribution important?

    • Better budget allocation: Helps marketers evaluate the contribution of different marketing channels.

    • Customer journey insights: Shows how customers move from awareness to consideration and purchase.

    • Campaign optimization: Helps identify interactions associated with conversions.

    • Cross-channel measurement: Supports analysis of paid search, social media, email, and other channels together.

    • Performance evaluation: Provides a broader view than relying exclusively on the final click.

    What are its limitations?

Multi-touch attribution depends on data quality, tracking coverage, attribution rules, and the ability to connect customer interactions across devices and channels. Assigned credit does not necessarily prove that a touchpoint caused a purchase, and privacy restrictions or incomplete tracking can affect results.

In short: Multi-touch attribution distributes conversion credit across multiple customer interactions, helping marketers understand how different channels contribute to sales and other campaign goals.
