Media planning is the process of deciding where, when, how, and how much a brand should spend on advertising to reach its target audience and achieve specific marketing objectives. It involves selecting the right channels, audiences, formats, timing, frequency, and budget for an advertising campaign.

    Key Elements of Media Planning

    • Campaign objectives: Defines what the campaign should achieve, such as awareness, traffic, leads, or sales.
    • Target audience: Identifies the people the campaign needs to reach based on demographics, interests, behaviors, location, or intent.
    • Media channel selection: Determines whether to use platforms such as Google, Meta, YouTube, LinkedIn, television, radio, websites, or retail media.
    • Budget allocation: Determines how much money should be invested in each channel, campaign, or audience.
    • Ad formats: Selects suitable formats such as search ads, display ads, video ads, social ads, native ads, or sponsored content.
    • Scheduling: Determines when advertisements should run and how frequently audiences should see them.
    • Reach and frequency: Plans how many unique people should be reached and how often they should be exposed to the campaign.
    • Geographic targeting: Determines the locations where advertisements should appear.
    • Performance forecasting: Estimates potential reach, impressions, clicks, conversions, and costs before launching.
    • Measurement: Establishes KPIs such as CPM, CTR, CPC, CPA, conversions, ROAS, and ROI.

    Example

An ecommerce jewellery brand with a ₹10 lakh advertising budget might allocate part of its budget to Google Search for high-intent customers, Instagram and Facebook for product discovery, and YouTube for video awareness. The media plan would specify the target audiences, spending, campaign periods, formats, and KPIs for each channel.

In short: Media planning ensures that a brand’s advertising budget is invested in the right channels, audiences, formats, and time periods to maximize campaign effectiveness and achieve business goals.
