Influencer fraud is deceptive or dishonest activity by an influencer or other party intended to artificially increase perceived influence, engagement, campaign results, or financial earnings.

Common types of influencer fraud include:

    • Fake followers: Purchasing bots or inactive accounts to inflate follower counts.
    • Fake engagement: Buying likes, comments, shares, or views to make content appear more popular.
    • Engagement pods: Coordinated groups artificially interacting with each other’s content to boost engagement metrics.
    • Misleading audience data: Providing inaccurate information about followers, demographics, reach, or engagement.
    • Fake clicks or conversions: Generating artificial website visits, link clicks, leads, or purchases to claim better campaign performance.
    • Undisclosed sponsorships: Promoting paid products without properly disclosing the commercial relationship.
    • Fraudulent content claims: Falsely claiming to have used, purchased, or benefited from a product.
    • Account impersonation: Creating fake accounts that imitate legitimate influencers or brands.
    • Affiliate fraud: Using artificial or unauthorized methods to generate commissions through affiliate links or codes.
    • Performance manipulation: Selectively reporting or altering campaign data to make results appear better than they actually were.

Example: An influencer with 200,000 followers purchases 100,000 fake followers and uses bots to generate thousands of likes. A brand may mistakenly believe the influencer has a highly engaged audience and pay for a campaign.

In short: Influencer fraud artificially inflates or misrepresents an influencer’s reach, engagement, or campaign performance, potentially causing brands to waste marketing budgets and make poor partnership decisions.
