GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a consumption tax applied to the sale of goods and services. It is collected by businesses on behalf of the government and is usually included in the price of products or added at checkout, depending on local tax rules.
In India, GST replaced many older indirect taxes and is structured into several components:
CGST (Central GST) – collected by the central government on intra-state sales.
SGST (State GST) – collected by the state government on intra-state sales.
UTGST (Union Territory GST) – used instead of SGST in Union Territories.
IGST (Integrated GST) – applied to inter-state sales and imports.
For example, if a product is sold within the same state, CGST and SGST are typically charged. If it is sold from one state to another, IGST is usually charged.
In Shopify, merchants selling in India can configure GST settings and their GST registration (GSTIN) so GST can be calculated on eligible orders.
