First-click attribution is a marketing measurement model that assigns 100% of the conversion credit to the first recorded marketing interaction through which a customer discovers or engages with a brand. It helps marketers understand which channel initially brought a customer into the customer journey before they eventually made a purchase, submitted a form, or completed another desired action.
Unlike last-click attribution, which credits the final eligible interaction, first-click attribution focuses on the beginning of the journey.
How does first-click attribution work?
Suppose a customer purchases a diamond ring from a Shopify jewellery store after interacting with several marketing channels:
Instagram advertisement: The customer first discovers the jewellery brand.
Google search: The customer researches the brand and its products.
Email campaign: The customer clicks an email featuring engagement rings.
Retargeting advertisement: The customer returns to the website and completes the purchase.
Under first-click attribution, the Instagram advertisement receives all the conversion credit because it was the first recorded eligible interaction.
Key features of first-click attribution
Focuses on customer discovery: Identifies the first recorded marketing touchpoint.
Evaluates awareness campaigns: Helps assess channels that introduce new audiences to a brand.
Supports marketing decisions: Provides insight into which channels initiate customer journeys.
Simplifies reporting: Assigns all credit to one touchpoint.
Has limitations: It ignores later interactions that may have helped persuade the customer to purchase.

When is first-click attribution useful?
First-click attribution can help businesses evaluate campaigns designed to introduce new customers to their products or services. However, it should be combined with other performance metrics or attribution methods because the first interaction does not necessarily cause the eventual conversion.
In short: First-click attribution gives all conversion credit to the first recorded eligible marketing interaction, helping marketers understand which channels initially attract customers.
