Attribution in paid media is the process of assigning credit to advertising interactions that contribute to a desired outcome, such as a purchase, lead, sign-up, or website conversion. It helps advertisers understand how paid campaigns and channels influence customer decisions and how advertising performance should be measured.

Customers often interact with multiple advertisements before converting. Attribution helps marketers evaluate these interactions rather than looking only at the final purchase.

    How does attribution work?

Suppose a customer purchases a ring from a Shopify jewellery store after interacting with several paid advertising channels:

    1. Instagram advertisement: Introduces the customer to the brand.

    2. Google Search ad: Helps the customer discover the ring again.

    3. Retargeting advertisement: Reminds the customer about the product.

    4. Purchase: The customer completes the order.

An attribution model determines how conversion credit is assigned to the recorded advertising touchpoints, according to the model’s rules.

    Common attribution models

    Attribution model

    How it assigns credit

    Last-click

Gives all credit to the last eligible interaction.

    First-click

Gives all credit to the first eligible interaction.

    Linear

Distributes credit equally across eligible touchpoints.

    Time-decay

Gives more credit to interactions closer to the conversion.

    Data-driven

Uses available data to estimate the contribution of different interactions.

The models available depend on the advertising platform and reporting system.

Why is attribution important in paid media?

    • Measures campaign performance: Helps evaluate which channels are associated with conversions.

    • Improves budget allocation: Supports decisions about where advertising spend may be most effective.

    • Explains customer journeys: Shows how customers interact with campaigns before converting.

    • Supports optimization: Helps marketers evaluate campaigns, audiences, and advertising strategies.

    • Improves reporting: Provides context for metrics such as CPA, conversion rate, and ROAS.

    Important limitations

Attribution is not the same as proving causation. A platform assigning credit to an ad does not necessarily mean that the ad caused the conversion. Tracking limitations, privacy settings, cross-device behavior, and different attribution windows can also affect results.

In short: Attribution in paid media helps advertisers assign conversion credit to advertising interactions, understand campaign contributions, and make better-informed marketing investment decisions.
