    An impression is a metric that counts each time an advertisement or piece of content is displayed to a user. In digital advertising, impressions measure how often an ad is shown, regardless of whether someone clicks, likes, or interacts with it.

    Impressions are commonly used in Google Ads, Meta Ads, display advertising, video campaigns, and other digital marketing channels to measure ad exposure.

    How do impressions work?

    Every time an ad is displayed and qualifies under the advertising platform’s counting rules, it can register an impression. If the same person sees the same ad multiple times, each eligible display can count as a separate impression.

    Example of impressions in advertising

    Suppose a Shopify jewellery store runs an Instagram advertisement promoting diamond rings.

    • Total impressions: 20,000

    • Reach: 8,000 unique accounts

    • Clicks: 400

    The advertisement generated 20,000 impressions, meaning it was displayed 20,000 times under the platform’s measurement rules. The 8,000 accounts represent the reported reach, while 400 clicks indicate user interactions.

    The average frequency is:

    Frequency=20,0008,000=2.5\text{Frequency}=\frac{20,000}{8,000}=2.5Frequency=8,00020,000=2.5

    This means each reached account saw the ad an average of 2.5 times.

    Why are impressions important?

    • Measure visibility: Show how often an advertisement is displayed.

    • Evaluate brand awareness: Help assess the exposure generated by awareness campaigns.

    • Calculate CPM: Cost per thousand impressions measures the cost of generating ad exposure.

    • Monitor frequency: Compare impressions with reach to understand repeated exposure.

    • Support campaign analysis: Interpret clicks and conversions in the context of how often ads were shown.
