A product feed is a structured file or data source containing information about the products an ecommerce business sells. It includes details such as product titles, descriptions, prices, images, availability, product URLs, and identifiers, allowing advertising platforms and shopping channels to display accurate product information.

Product feeds are commonly used with Google Merchant Center, Google Shopping ads, Meta catalog ads, and other ecommerce marketing platforms.

Key elements of a product feed:

    • Product title: The name of the product being sold.

    • Product description: Details about the product’s features, materials, specifications, or benefits.

    • Product price: The current selling price and, where applicable, the original price.

    • Product image: A URL or reference to the product’s image.

    • Availability: Indicates whether the product is in stock, out of stock, or available for preorder.

    • Product URL: A link to the product page on the online store.

    • Product identifiers: Information such as SKU, GTIN, or brand, when applicable.

    • Product category: A classification that helps platforms understand the product type.

    • Additional attributes: Details such as color, size, material, shipping, and product variants.

    Example:

A Shopify jewellery store creates a product feed for its engagement rings.

This information can be synchronized with Google Merchant Center so eligible products can appear in Google Shopping experiences and advertising campaigns.

    Types of product feeds:

    • File-based feeds: Product information is uploaded through files such as CSV, XML, or TSV.

    • API-based feeds: Product data is transferred programmatically through a platform’s supported API.

    • Scheduled feeds: Product information is refreshed automatically at defined intervals.

    • Real-time or frequent synchronization: Product information is updated more frequently to help keep prices and availability accurate.

Why is a product feed important?

    • Helps display products accurately across shopping platforms.

    • Supports product advertising and catalog campaigns.

    • Reduces manual data entry.

    • Helps keep prices and inventory synchronized.

    • Makes it easier to manage large product catalogues.

    • Helps identify missing or incorrect product information.

In short: A product feed is a structured collection of product data that helps ecommerce businesses share their catalogue with advertising platforms, shopping channels, and other services.
