Conversions are valuable actions that people complete after interacting with a website, advertisement, or marketing campaign. In digital marketing and paid media, a conversion occurs when a user completes an action that supports a business goal, such as making a purchase, submitting a lead form, signing up for a newsletter, or booking a consultation.

Conversions help advertisers measure whether their marketing efforts are producing meaningful results rather than just generating impressions or clicks.

    Common types of conversions

    • Purchase conversions: A customer buys a product from an online store.

    • Lead conversions: A visitor submits a contact form or requests a quote.

    • Sign-up conversions: A user creates an account or subscribes to a newsletter.

    • Download conversions: A visitor downloads an ebook, guide, or application.

    • Phone call conversions: A potential customer calls a business after seeing an advertisement.

    • Booking conversions: A user schedules an appointment or consultation.

    • Add-to-cart conversions: A shopper adds a product to their cart. This is often tracked as a micro-conversion rather than a completed sale.

    Example of conversions in eCommerce

Suppose a Shopify jewellery store runs a Google Ads campaign to promote engagement rings.

    • 10,000 ad impressions

    • 500 ad clicks

    • 50 completed purchases

In this example, the 50 purchases are purchase conversions.

    The click-to-purchase conversion rate is:

    Conversion Rate=50500×100=10%\text{Conversion Rate}=\frac{50}{500}\times100=10\%Conversion Rate=50050×100=10%

This means 10% of the ad clicks resulted in a purchase, assuming the figures are measured consistently.

    Why are conversions important?

    • Measure business results: Show whether campaigns are generating sales, leads, or other valuable actions.

    • Evaluate advertising effectiveness: Help compare campaign performance.

    • Optimize ad campaigns: Provide data for bidding strategies and targeting decisions.

    • Calculate key metrics: Support measurement of conversion rate, cost per acquisition (CPA), and return on ad spend (ROAS).

    • Improve decision-making: Help businesses allocate budgets toward their marketing objectives.

    What is conversion tracking?

Conversion tracking is the process of recording when users complete specified actions. Advertisers can use tools such as Google Ads conversion tracking, Google Analytics, and Meta Pixel or Conversions API, depending on their setup and consent requirements.

In short: Conversions are the desired actions users take after engaging with marketing, allowing businesses to measure the real outcomes of their advertising campaigns.
