    CTR (Click-Through Rate) is calculated by dividing the number of clicks an advertisement receives by its total impressions and multiplying the result by 100. It measures the percentage of ad impressions that result in clicks and helps advertisers understand how effectively an ad attracts attention and encourages users to visit a website or take another action.

    CTR formula

    CTR=Total ClicksTotal Impressions×100\text{CTR}=\frac{\text{Total Clicks}}{\text{Total Impressions}}\times100CTR=Total ImpressionsTotal Clicks×100

    Example of CTR calculation

    Suppose a Shopify jewellery store runs a Google Ads campaign promoting diamond rings.

    • Total impressions: 20,000

    • Total clicks: 600

    Calculation:

    CTR=60020,000×100\text{CTR}=\frac{600}{20,000}\times100CTR=20,000600×100
    CTR=3%\boxed{\text{CTR}=3\%}CTR=3%

    This means 3% of the ad impressions resulted in clicks.

    Why is CTR important?

    • Measures ad engagement: Shows how often people click after seeing an ad.

    • Evaluates ad creatives: Helps compare headlines, images, videos, and calls to action.

    • Supports optimization: Helps identify advertisements that may need improvement.

    • Assesses audience relevance: A higher CTR can indicate that an ad resonates with its audience.

    • Helps analyze performance: Provides context alongside conversion rate, cost per click (CPC), and return on ad spend (ROAS).

    What is a good CTR?

    There is no universal benchmark for a good CTR. It varies by advertising platform, industry, campaign objective, audience, and ad format. Compare CTR across similar campaigns and evaluate it alongside conversions and costs.

    In short: CTR is calculated as clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. For example, 600 clicks from 20,000 impressions produces a CTR of 3%.
