Cart abandonment can be reduced by making the shopping and checkout experience simple, transparent, fast, and trustworthy. The goal is to remove reasons that cause customers to add products to their cart but leave without purchasing.

    Key strategies:

    1. Show total costs early – Clearly communicate product price, shipping fees, taxes, and other charges before checkout.
    2. Offer multiple payment options – Support popular cards, wallets, UPI, and other relevant payment methods.
    3. Simplify checkout – Reduce unnecessary fields and steps.
    4. Enable guest checkout – Don’t require customers to create an account before purchasing.
    5. Use express checkout – Options such as Shop Pay and other accelerated payments can reduce checkout friction.
    6. Display clear delivery information – Show estimated delivery dates, shipping costs, and available delivery options.
    7. Provide easy returns and refunds – Clearly communicate return, refund, and cancellation policies.
    8. Build trust – Use genuine reviews, testimonials, security indicators, and clear business/contact information.
    9. Optimize for mobile – Make cart and checkout pages easy to navigate on smartphones.
    10. Recover abandoned carts – Send relevant email, SMS, or other permitted reminders to customers who leave items behind.
    11. Avoid unexpected distractions – Keep the checkout focused and minimize unnecessary popups or navigation.
    12. Fix technical issues – Test payment failures, coupon errors, form validation, slow loading, and checkout bugs.
    13. Test different experiences – Use analytics and A/B testing to identify where shoppers abandon the process.

    Example

If customers frequently abandon carts after seeing high shipping costs, a store could display shipping costs earlier, offer free shipping above a certain order value, or provide additional delivery options.

In CRO, reducing cart abandonment means identifying and removing the friction, uncertainty, cost surprises, and trust issues that prevent customers from completing their purchase.
