Shopify POS works best with an internet connection, but it can also operate with limited offline functionality.
When connected to the internet, Shopify POS can synchronize inventory, customer data, orders, and payments with your Shopify store in real time.
If the internet connection is temporarily unavailable, Shopify POS can still allow certain in-person sales to be completed using offline capabilities (availability depends on the device, payment method, and POS configuration). Once the connection is restored, the app syncs the stored transactions with Shopify.
In practice:
Internet connected: full POS functionality, inventory sync, customer profiles, reporting, and payment processing.
Offline temporarily: limited sales functionality may be available, but some features—such as real-time inventory updates, customer lookups, and certain payment methods—may not work until connectivity returns.
So, Shopify POS does not always require continuous internet access, but an internet connection is recommended for full functionality and reliable payment processing.
